Victoria Fine Arts Association donates to Children’s Discovery Museum

A cornerstone of the Victoria Fine Arts Association (VFAA) is partnership. We believe that anything worth doing is worth doing well. On August 24, 2018, directors and advisors of VFAA met at the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Golden Crescent (CDM)  to donate $3,500. These funds will go toward building a really cool new exhibit!

About a year ago, a director of the CDM, Geri Schroeder, approached the VFAA and presented an opportunity to partner with the museum. There had been interest at CDM to build an interactive music installation and they were ready to begin finding partners. Of course, VFAA thought it was only natural that we “pitch” in!

With a little bit of planning and some careful selection, the VFAA voted to donate the funds to purchase a musical flower percussion set. These musical flowers come in a set of four. Each flower stands between 39” to 48” tall. There are four metal petals on each flower and each petal represents a different note. Children will be able to play all four musical flowers with a rubber mallet.

Why did VFAA feel this was the perfect fit? Contributing to the CDM was a no-brainer. This project speaks directly to our mission statement:

The VFAA will be a leader in the development and appreciation of the performing arts through collaborating with local organizations.

According to a study published in the journal Brain:

Enhanced performance in digit span gives additional evidence for transfer effect between music and non-musical abilities such as literacy, verbal memory, visuospatial processing, mathematics and IQ.

However, learning a musical instrument can seem daunting. What better way to introduce music to a child’s life than in an interactive way while surrounded by a world built specifically for their creativity? Enter, the perfect partner for this project, CDM.
