Our Story

VFAA started in 1946 as the Victoria Concert Association, a small group set on bringing live classical music to town. For the very first concert, founding president Marjorie Steele Frels had the piano moved from her own home to the Victoria Theatre. The group later became Victoria Community Concerts and then the Victoria Fine Arts Association.

For more than 50 years, VFAA ran a subscription concert series at Victoria College. Leontyne Price, Luciano Pavarotti, Itzhak Perlman, André Watts, the Vienna Choir Boys, the Trapp Family Singers and Canadian Brass all performed here. In 1972 the association bought a nine-foot Steinway concert grand, and visiting artists signed the inside of its frame. That piano is still at Victoria College.

In 2003 VFAA turned toward festivals and themed events, from the first downtown Jazz Festival to JAM Fest, Jazz Brunch and today's Après Jazz and Night at the Museum. Along the way it has put instruments and art programs in front of local students, including new guitars for Victoria East and West High Schools in 2022.

Our Mission

The heart of the Victoria Fine Arts Association (VFAA) is to share all aspects of music, art and culture with the surrounding community. The VFAA shall showcase diverse talents and skills in the Crossroads that foster appreciation and further stimulate interest in the fine arts, leveraging the collective strength of other nonprofits.

Vision: A community where every life is richer for the arts.

“Fine Arts are something that transcends cultural, race, and economic boundaries. I truly think that being able to support the VFAA is a privilege that will allow me to help give back to the community. I love that the arts cover so many different areas of interest.”

Laura Koliba

“The VFAA is inclusive of all arts and collaborates with other non-profits in the crossroads area to provide additional art exhibits and events throughout the year. I enjoy being a part of a board that works together to come up with fresh inventive events. It’s an amazing feeling to have the opportunity to donate instruments or tuition for camps to our community. I look forward to continuing to serve the VFAA board and the Victoria community.”

George Matthews

Secretary

“Our community has always supported the arts and local history is the best evidence of that support.Spain sought empires to develop Texas. These visionaries brought people of culture and old world values to this new land. Their values included an appreciation for music, art, and dance. They were never limited to a privileged few. They were for everyone. As time passes our cultural heritage evolves. One can see and hear the influence of Europe and Eastern Europe as well as Asia, Africa, South East Asia and the Mid-East. Each has contributed and combined to form new forms of art, music and dance in Texas. The Victoria Fine Arts Association carries on this mission of sharing our combined cultural heritage. For three quarters of a century performances and concerts flourished. Under the guidance of its founders and subsequent board members, the very best singers, dancers, musicians, pianists and actors have graced our performance venues. If they appeared on the great stages of Europe, Russia, Asia or the United States they may have also performed in Victoria.”

"Art allows us to express, examine, and evaluate ourselves as well as the world around us. Without it, we cannot grow as empathetic members of society. It unites all humanity, rising above language and transcending time and place. Promoting the arts encourages the community to gather together to learn about each other’s experiences, viewpoints, or interests, which broadens everyone’s worldly understanding. This is why I joined and contribute to the Victoria Fine Arts Association. I hope that Victoria continues to promote all artists, so that we may learn from and support each other’s self-expression.”

Sandra DeLaGarza

Fundraising Chair

“I have always had deep passion for the Arts stemming from an early childhood while creating neighborhood theatre productions and musical passion experiences. This coupled into further schooling and educational interest of Art. I support the positivity of art to inspire creativity. Fine Arts plays a significant role in our community contributing to local development and education. This influences a positive and unique opportunity to make a difference. By being on the board, I can continue to support in promoting the arts in our community with emerging with fellow members who share the same passion.”

Erica Bancuch

Director

“There is a quote from Salvador Dali ‘A true artist is not one who is inspired but one who inspires others’ that resonates with me. Art can be a very broad term that encompasses many different types of passion and expression. We all have something unique that drives and inspires us, and I love that those inspirations are as uniquely individual as we are. I thoroughly enjoy being able to serve through volunteerism and working on this board. The talent and amazing people working together at VFAA is truly inspiring!”

David Edge

Director

“Fine Arts Organizations and Opportunities change people’s lives, and the Creative Genius involved is life enriching also.Take away colors and textures, voices and instruments, movements and dance, and comedy and drama, then the World as we know it would be Lifeless. The VFAA has a mission and goals to promote, create, and support fine arts in the community and schools. My “Why” is to bridge these two worlds and see the Fine Arts Flourish.”

“Why are the fine arts so important? The fine arts give Victorians an outlet in which they can shape and mold their community firsthand. Keeping VFAA current and available to all community members is imperative to Victoria’s appeal to new prospective residents. A healthy fine arts culture equals a healthy economic culture.”
